New outdoors blog by a journalist *

petethomasblog.jpgPete Thomas had one of those newspaper reporting jobs that many lust for — he wrote stories and blog entries about outdoor and action sports for the Los Angeles Times sports section. He was laid off in December, one day before his 52nd birthday — after thirty years at the newspaper where his father, William F. Thomas, used to be editor in chief. What's a guy to to do but start a blog and try to continue covering the beat, without all the travel and exotic fishing excursions.

I had a good run and learned a lot while covering a beat that involved countless fishing trips, sporadic hunting adventures, attending surf contests, diving with great white sharks, kayaking with whales, hitting the slopes and much more.

The blog, which is a work in progress, will not involve extensive travel--unless by some miracle I land a very generous sponsor. It will, however, call upon my experience and recollections, and will share news and commentary regarding the wonderful world of outdoors, action sports and adventure.

His Outposts blog for the Times has [* not] been folded into The Fabulous Forum, the paper's sports blog. [Oops, Outposts is still being published, mainly fed by by sports department administrator Kelly Burgess.]
