Dean Singleton's MediaNews, publishers of the Daily News, Daily Breeze, Press-Telegram, SGV Tribune and other local newspapers, is taking the pre-packaged bankruptcy route in hopes of survival with Singleton in charge. Friday's news has spurred some reaction. Media analyst Ken Doctor speculates that Singleton will emerge strong enough to drive mergers with other papers, including perhaps even the Times in L.A. It's the beginning of the end of the pretense of competing newspapers in L.A., says former Daily News editor Ron Kaye.
