Doug Ring, 65, found dead at home *

Developer, lawyer and philanthropist Doug Ring was discovered at the Brentwood home he shares with his wife, former City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski, the L.A. Times' news blog says. Ring and his family business have been players in Los Angeles real estate and politics for decades. He was executive director of USC's Selden Ring Award, a prestigious investigative journalism award named for his father. I believe Doug Ring also worked for county Supervisor Baxter Ward back in the 1970s. In 2004, Ring resigned as a CRA commissioner for then-mayor Jim Hahn and joined the mayoral campaign of Bob Hertzberg.

Miscikowski, recently named president of the Board of Harbor Commissioners, is said to be returning to L.A. from China.

* LAT's 9:53 p.m. update: Possible suicide, said coroner's Investigator Jerry McKibben, citing an initial police report: "There was some indication that he may have taken an overdose of pills." LAPD robbery-homicide detectives have ruled out foul play.
