The young migrating gray whale is spending much of its time in the main Marina del Rey channel. KABC's Michael Linder says you can often spot the whale from the jetty where Pacific Avenue ends at the channel in the Marina Peninsula neighborhood. Photo is from Fox 11's website story. This, by the way, is where an infant gray whale was rescued in 1997 and taken to Sea World, where it was dubbed J.J. and allowed to fatten up for a year before being released to much hoopla. Coming eye-to-eye with J.J. in the underwater window at Sea World is still one of my personal favorite animal experiences. The whale currently feeding in the Marina apparently is in no distress and moves between the channel and the bay. It may just not be ready to head north yet.
