Daily News layoffs: O'Connor, Dilbeck

Among the newsroom cuts at the Daily News are the editorial cartoonist Patrick O'Connor and sports columnist Steve Dilbeck, both fixtures in L.A. media. I'm told that today's layoffs will take the newsroom to a staff of 78. Gary Scott has the other names, and reports that Aron Miller lost out on a severance check because LAO reported that he accepted a new job. I'd confirmed the job with Miller, as posted, and he said nothing about any severance being in jeopardy.

Noted: Among the layoffs were senior picture editor Roger Vargo, in his 30th year at the Daily News, and other newsroom stalwarts. "Whether through their work or their personalities, they were all very much of the soul of the old place," a former staffer emails. "A very sad day, indeed."
