Music history lost in Universal fire

Saving films
Thousands of original Decca, MCA, and ABC master recordings belonging to Universal Music were lost in today's fire at Universal Studios, Nikki Finke says, quoting an unidentified source. Artists such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland and the Carpenters were represented in the masters stored in the destroyed video vault, Finke reports at Deadline Hollywood Daily. "This is a tremendous loss in music history. A very sad day indeed," says her source. "It's too bad they saved the videos that they have backups on instead of the master recordings in which they do not..." Studio chief Ron Meyer was quoted all day saying no irreplaceable film or videos were lost, but the master recordings are owned by a separate company that rents space in the vault, according to Finke.
