The boulevard is closed to traffic from Harvard to Western, and booths have been put up to celebrate Earth Day with a car-free street festival and "special musical yoga experience." Kind of symbolic in the end, as Patt Morrison notes on the Times' Opinion blog:
Strolling the boulevard named after a millionaire socialist, Gaylord Wilshire, will no doubt be a pleasure, and a reminder of how delightful car-free living can be.But did anyone who thought up this ''honor'' also think of how many extra tons of carbon emissions will be burbling into the atmosphere today because of the traffic jams created by this one-day pedestrian oasis?
Earth to LA -- thanks a bunch.
Here's a perkier Times blog view.
