Prepare for layoffs, mayor tells City Hall

Previous mayors have warned of potential staff cuts when budgets are tight, but the last actual layoffs were in the early 1980s. Mayor Villaraigosa's warning comes with city officials facing a $155 million budget gap this year and as much as $300 to $500 million when the new fiscal years begins July 1. DN

Steve Thomas Rooney, charged last week with sex with one of his Markham Middle School girls, had previously been accused of having sex with a 17-year-old and pulling a gun on her stepfather while Rooney was AP at Fremont High. LAT


Joe Francis pleads no contest to get out of jail

The Girls Gone wild founder pleads to child abuse and prostitution charges in Florida, then goes outside and says "I have never committed any crime. I pleaded guilty just to get out of jail. A few corrupt individuals were able to keep an innocent man in jail for 11 months." He still faces charges in Nevada. AP


Cooley draws no major opposition

District Attorney Steve Cooley's only announced opponents for a third term are Steve Ipsen, a county prosecutor, and Albert Robles, a constitutional lawyer and professor. DN


Rocky will announce Skid Row settlement

City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo at 10:45 am will join with tenant's rights groups to announce a $1 million settlement agreement with two downtown residential hotels over the "28 Day Shuffle."
