No progress in writers strike

Yesterday was the day when stars were brought out to the picket lines to entice the media with tales of woe about productions shutting down and expressions of support for friends and co-workers. The other meme of the day was show runners who are both producers and writers backing the Writers Guild. Meanwhile, will writers obey the guild rule that they submit unfinished scripts for "validation?" A "near universal" security breakdown at the Simi Valley institution opened the collection of presidential stuff to pilfering by insiders, says an audit by the National Archives inspector general. LAT

StoryCorps returns to Santa Monica

The national initiative to document everyday history and stories will park its silver Airstream "StoryBooth" trailer near the north end of the Santa Monica Promenade from today through Dec. 8. On Sunday, creator David Isay will do a reading and book signing from 2 – 3:30 pm.

UCLA honors its veterans

Retired Maj. Gen. John Singlaub and the family of 2nd Lt. Mark Daily, killed in Iraq in January and discussed by Christopher Hitchens in the November issue of Vanity Fair, will attend the Friday unveiling of the first memorial at UCLA to honor alumni who have died in wars. UCLA Newsroom

Staffers to stringers

Former L.A. Times staffers Michael Parrish and J. Michael Kennedy shows up as credited contributors to a piece in today's New York Times. Parrish is freelancing regularly for the national desk out of Los Angeles (and teaching at USC Annenberg), Kennedy is in Seattle.
