Avalon evacuated

creditAbout 3,000 visitors to Catalina were moved off the island last night as the wildfire approached Avalon. More than 4,000 acres have been burned, but conditions are looking better this morning. Avalon is no longer threatened and a marine layer has raised humidity. Fire trucks are arriving from the mainland by Navy craft. Two representatives of the Consul General of Mexico arrived about midnight to post signs telling undocumented Mexicans working on the island who need help to call the consulate.
