More findings from last week's LA Observed reader survey:
→ Half of the 804 respondents live in the city of Los Angeles (so half live outside — duh.) Half are between the ages of 36 and 55, and half say they have an annual household income higher than $100,000.
→ You read newspapers and rely on online news sources. You rate public radio very high, but 50% say you never listen to talk radio. Excerpt:
How often do you use these sources? | Daily or regularly |
L.A. Times | 89% |
News websites | 82% |
Blogs other than LA Observed | 69% |
Public radio | 65% |
New York Times | 61% |
TV and cable news | 57% |
Daily News | 25% |
Talk radio | 25% |
→ Your reading of local websites and blogs is well distributed. Those scoring in double figures:
Los Angeles-based websites and blogs | Daily or regularly |
LATimes.com | 73% |
LA Weekly.com | 33% |
Defamer | 25% |
Huffington Post | 23% |
Daily News.com | 18% |
TMZ | 17% |
LAist | 15% |
Fishbowl LA | 11% |
I tried to hold the possible answers to a manageable size on the survey, and I omit some of the results above (LAO Insiders will receive more details via email). To go beyond my list, though, survey respondents could nominate their own favorite sources. Quite an array of write-ins regarding media habits after the jump.
There were more than 200 write-in suggestions. These were the local news and information sources mentioned by a substantial number of respondents, in approximate order:
→ The Daily Breeze, Orange County Register and Long Beach Press-Telegram were mentioned more than any other.
→ Franklin Avenue was mentioned more than other personal blogs, followed by L.A. City Nerd and Dodger Thoughts.
→ La Opinión.
→ San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
→ CityBeat.
→ Perez Hilton.
→ Eating L.A. and Eater LA.
→ CityWatch.
→ Sigalert.com.
→ Blogdowntown and Downton News.
Selected comments from survey respondents:
→ BoingBoing will sometimes have posts about Southland events that I don't hear about elsewhere.
→ Downtown News for what's going on in downtown LA.
→ Pink is the New Blog (but only as an antidote to real news.)
→ Venice Paper; Free Venice Beachhead.
→ I visit Patterico.com pretty frequently, though I virtually never agree with him.
→ Spanish media and Mayor Sam (gossip.)
→ The Los Angeles Sentinel, the Wave, La Opinión.
→ My secret vice is PerezHilton.com.
→ The elevator in any highrise building. Look bored and keep your mouth shut. It's amazing what incriminating things people will say in a small box as it moves vertically.
→ I also occasionally look at volokhconspiracy.com by Eugene Volokh, law prof at UCLA, and Patterico.com.
→ Go outside and look around. :)
→ LA CITY NERD!!!!
→ My neighbor. Damn lady is a news junkie and stays home all day.
About the survey: 804 LA Observed readers took the survey online last week, by self selection. It's not a random sample, scientific poll — just information.
