Morning BuzzSome Pellicano news, the start of the Dowie-Stodder trial, a new blogger on the City Council and of course so much more—including a farewell in the Daily News newsroom, a new prez of the Chicano news media association and all the newspaper front pages you could want to see this early in the day. Turn the page...

♦ The L.A. Times website wasn't working this morning. I'll update later as needed.
♦ Today in Pellicano: Indicted director John McTiernan has been using Pellicano to spy and muscle for years (LAT)...Ross Johnson of LA Indie and law professor Laurie Levenson were on Warren Olney's Which Way, L.A.? last evening to talk about the Pellicano case. Here's the audio.
♦ Dowie-Stodder trial: The Daily News looks in on the first day—fittingly, since one of the defendants is the paper's former managing editor. PR Week also is interested because of the Fleishman-Hillard angle:
This morning's jury selection process was preceded by administrative comments by the Honorable Judge Gary A. Feess, who advised attorneys on both sides to schedule enough witnesses for each day's testimony—and not to expect lunch breaks. Looking well-rested and clean-shaven, Dowie, 58, is represented by lead attorney Thomas Holliday, co-chair of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Los Angeles' Business Crimes and Investigations Practice Group. Also defending Dowie are Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher lawyers Michael Farhang and Nicola Hanna, among others. Co-defendant John Stodder, 50, is represented by lead attorney Jan Lawrence Handzlik with Michael L. Resch, both of Howrey, Los Angeles. Representing the United States Department of Justice are Assistant US Attorneys Adam D. Kamenstein and Cheryl O'Connor Murphy. The prosecution is expected to present its opening cases on Thursday. The prosecution expects to display at least 160 government exhibits -- some 50-60 pages in length -- including e-mails and Fleishman billing documents.
♦ Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa: The Press-Telegram has funeral coverage.
♦ Another elected blog: Add Councilman Bill Rosendahl to the ranks of elected officials who are moving the traditional newsletter to constituents online, tweaking it a tad and calling it a blog. He also unveiled a greatly revised and informative website for his 11th district council office.
♦ Calendar: Mayor Villaraigosa meets with Mikhail Gorbachev this morning then appears on Channel 34 for his weekly "A Su Lado" segment at 6 pm and on KCAL-9 News for "Ask the Mayor" at 9:25 pm.
♦ Animal fights: A blog that says it's doing truth squad duty on the Animal Defense League claims it got inside the group's website and found the only real assets are president Pamelyn Ferdin and a friendly CityBeat reporter.
♦ New Los Angeles-centric magazine: 944. Part of the letter to readers from editor Karen Knighton:
I love this town because even when I set out to do mundane things they can end up being spectacular experiences. For instance, once in my morning yoga class, as my breath began to deepen, I glanced over to find Dave Navarro stretched out in down-dog next to me mocking my au-natural look with his meticulously manicured, black-lacquered nails. Oh my! I don’t really get star-struck, but I used to kiss his picture on my Jane’s Addiction poster every night; it’s hard to keep my third eye from wondering! Nevertheless, over the years of living here I’ve run circles through many different hamster wheels (and I know I am not alone). I’ve been the a-typical model/actress/waitress, jetting day in and day out to auditions and the like with headshot and zed card in hand. I pursued voice-overs as well as fashion styling. I’ve been fired and hired at random will, shook my money-maker in music videos and even explored a few professions outside of the law. Yet, when I think about all the personalities that surround me, I feel it’s this city that provokes us into becoming a Jack of all Trades, of sorts.
♦ Things change: The once-secretive Buffalo Club in Santa Monica is so far out in the open now that it has posted signs on Olympic Boulevard, says Hollywood Thoughts.
♦ Elevated: The Daily News' Rachel Uranga is the new president of the L.A. chapter of the California Chicano News Media Assn. The chapter is feting retired Los Angeles Times editor Frank Sotomayor on Thursday at Olvera Street's El Paseo Inn.
♦ News of the News: The Paper Trail, blog of the Daily News' Brent Hopkins, wishes colleague Evan Pondel well as he leaves the newsroom. Lisa Mascaro isn't mentioned, but she's departing too for Washington where her husband scored a new museum job.
♦ Editor honored: Mark Lacter, the former editor of the Los Angeles Business Journal, won a Society of American Business Editors and Writers award for the weekly columns he used to write. No other locals got a thing.
♦ Newly noticed: Lori MacBlogger is a blog about living in Los Angeles.
♦ L.A. obituary: Henry Farrell, author of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and other books, died in Pacific Palisades at age 85.
