NYC publishing reporter for LAT

Josh Getlin, New York bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, is moving over to the Calendar staff to cover the publishing beat. He will remain bureau chief, while mixing stories about the nexus of publishing and the entertainment industry with general coverage of the books biz. Memo to the Times staff follows:

To: The Staff
From: Lennie LaGuire, Deputy Features Editor
and Richard Nordwind, Media Editor

We're pleased to announce that Josh Getlin will be joining the Calendar staff with a new beat focusing on the publishing world in New York. Josh has been covering national news out of New York since 1998. In his new assignment, which begins next week, Josh will report on the publishing world's connection to the entertainment industry, along with the business and culture of publishing in general. Josh, who was named New York bureau chief in 2001, will continue in that capacity.

It would take a book to sum up Josh's experiences at The Times, but here's the Cliffs Notes version: He started at The Times as a reporter in the San Fernando Valley suburban section in 1979, and since then has worked at City Hall, in the Orange County edition, as a Capitol Hill correspondent for the Washington Bureau, as a New York-based features writer, and even (briefly) as deputy editor of the Times Book Review.

Josh grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1971 and received a master's degree in journalism in 1972 from Columbia University. He's married to Heidi Evans, an investigative reporter for the New York Daily News, and they have an 11-year-old daughter, Alex.

Josh's move to Calendar is the latest facet of our enhanced literary coverage. Anne-Marie O'Connor currently covers the national literary scene with a special emphasis on Southern California. Tim Rutten now writes a weekly book review. And a strong partnership has been forged between the Book Review section and Daily Calendar, which has yielded timely pieces and reviews by book review writer Susan Salter Reynolds and a greater presence for book reviews in Daily Calendar.

Josh will report to Assistant Entertainment Editor Maria Russo.
