Recruits at the LAPD Academy now spend the last four weeks of their seven-month training cycle walking a beat. Forty-three officers have begun patrolling downtown's Historic Core and in the jewelry, toy and fashion districts, Chris Coates reports in the Downtown News.

Also of note downtown: St. Vibiana's reopened with a benefit for the L.A. Conservancy, and Trader Joe's is showing a whiff of interest in opening a store.
