Just to follow-up from this morning's item, which did get a good bit of traffic and a Gawker link, the Newspaper Guild in the New York Times newsroom has gotten over its objections to ethics training for reporters. This was emailed to the staff this afternoon:
ETHICS TRAINING UPDATEThe Guild has now completed discussions with The Times regarding the new Business Ethics Policy that was announced recently, and the training that all employees are being asked to undergo.
The Guild's concerns about the training have been addressed satisfactorily by Times management, and we are now advising all Guild members at The Times, NY Times Digital, and WQXR to complete the training course.
As we have reported previously, the union negotiated with management over the new policy and made every effort to make sure that employees' private rights were protected to the maximum extent possible, and that the policy is applied in a manner consistent with our collective bargaining agreement.
This new policy was prompted, in part, by new federal legislation aimed at ensuring ethical practices in the business world, and is being rolled out across the entire New York Times Company. Similar policies have been negotiated by the Guild at other companies with which the union has contracts.
We strongly urge everyone to read the entire Business Ethics Policy carefully. Links to the full policy appear in the training course. You will be required to acknowledge that you have received it and that you will be in compliance with it.
Sounds like the quiz is history. Now we can all go back to our lives. (* The quiz lives on, says Editor & Publisher.)
