The Olympic flame atop the Coliseum was lit Saturday in honor of Pope John Paul II, and Catholic masses were offered here in twenty-nine languages. "Today, we are not altogether surprised, but profoundly saddened nonetheless, by the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope John Paul II into eternal life," Cardinal Roger Mahony said before after leaving for Rome. An entire week of liturgical masses at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels began Saturday at 5 p.m. and continues Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Full schedule. Local reaction in the Times and Daily News.
