The Times' Jeffrey L. Rabin reveals that for two months Bob Hertzberg has refused to disclose the law clients that have paid him $1 million a year at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw. The story says that Hertzberg first claimed attorney-client privilege, then revised that to say a confidentiality clause in the law firm's contracts forbids disclosure. Finally, though, he asked twenty clients if they would mind, and seven said OK. They are the city Community Redevelopment Agency and DWP, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., the Metropolitan Water District, KB Home, Western Water Co. and Caliber Collision Centers. In each case, they wanted Hertzberg's political connections or strategic advice, not courtoom talent. In a twist, Hertzberg got the CRA job via Mayor Jim Hahn, the Times reports:

"I knew that Bob had a very close relationship with Supervisor Gloria Molina," Hahn said. "So, I thought he would be able to help, you know, kind of build a bridge to Supervisor Molina based on his skills as a lawyer, as a legislator, and of course because of the longtime personal and political relationship that he had with her. Unfortunately, it didn't work."
