Mayor Hahn's campaign schedule for Sunday includes stops at several black churches, Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, Canter's on Fairfax and Farmers Market. Bob Hertzberg's first deli is Brent's in Northridge, before he lunches at the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda. Then it gets interesting: they are scheduled to work Canter's (2 p.m.) and Farmers Market (3 p.m.) at the same hour. [* Update: Hertzberg's campaign now bills the stops as a confrontation with Hahn: "Let's see if he has the guts to show up and meet Bob face to face."] Election Day minus two:
Round-up stories: Villaraigosa and Alarcon (with actor George Lopez) touring the city by bus. Hahn demands to know Hertzberg's law clients. Hertzberg hits The Pantry with Richard Riordan. Parks visits with Muhammad Ali. Hahn consultant Kam Kuwata: "This is nervous time." Times, Daily News, Daily Breeze.
'Historic crossroads:' Rick Orlov in the Daily News says "Not since Tom Bradley came to power by molding a coalition of inner-city minorities and Westside liberals has the political climate of Los Angeles been in such a flux." To back it up, he quotes former Bradley aide Tom Sullivan and ex-councilwoman Roz Wyman, among others.
On the Villaraigosa bus: Fred 62 at 4 a.m., Lucky Strike Lanes, Sylmar Little League, etc. Times.
Sunday opinions: Commentaries in the Times from Gregory Rodriguez, Joel Kotkin, Anthony York and Linda Griego, former deputy mayor turned ex-Angeleno who writes:
"It's been 12 years since I ran for mayor of Los Angeles — and everything and nothing has changed in the city. From my desk here in Chama, N.M., where I oversee a lodge, I remember with a laugh that race in which I was the only female candidate....To this day, people recognize me from my 'infamous' TV ad, in which I wore a bright crimson blazer and walked among nine black-and-white cardboard cutouts of my male opponents. I remain 'that chick in the red jacket.'"
The Sunday Opinion cover is devoted to a cartoon on the race by Mark Alan Stamaty that credits Hertzberg with the "fastest pie chart in the West.".
And to break the tension: A hilarious Quicktime movie of the secret mayoral debate you didn't see, played at Thursday night's American Diabetes Association roast emceed by Eric Garcetti. None of the Big Five escape some playful skewering.
