L.A. rain falls mainly on USC

Weather stationWhen TV and newspaper weather reports talk about the amount of rainfall in the "Civic Center," don't believe it. The rain is actually being measured by a weather device beside the tennis stadium at USC, near Vermont Avenue and 36th Place. The rain gauge used to be downtown, Chris Coates reports in the Downtown News, but moved south in 1999. Some TV stations still report legitimate Civic Center temperature readings, though—obtained from a thermometer downtown at the DWP building, where the rain gauge stood too until 1964.
