Tonight on Channel 5's News at Ten, co-anchor Leila Feinstein narrated a story about her mother, a child psychologist, going to Thailand to work with tsunami victims. Feinstein opened the piece by letting us know she had grown up in Thailand, and that her mother, Dr. Pratarnporn Feinstein, had been asked to come back and help out. The story was illustrated with video of the tsunami aftermath and of Feinstein reading her mother's emails. Her mother was also heard (with her photo on screen) talking on the phone from home in Rhode Island, where the Feinstein Foundation run by the doctor's husband is noted for giving out $1 million a year to fight hunger. Channel 5 hasn't been shy about family-style journalism. "News at Ten" covered co-anchor Mindy Burbano's wedding shower in 2003. Hal Fishman may be the town's oldest and longest-reigning anchor, but the 10 p.m. newscast's style is trending younger and more casual. There are regular features from Kurt the Cyberguy, field reporter Jaime Chambers gives the surf report dressed like a wrinkled surfer dude, and gossip columnist Zorianna Kit's blue jeans were clearly visible tonight below the news desk.
