Glendale deaths now 11

The Los Angeles Fire Department media relations blog announces the death of Julia Bennett, 44, a senior clerk typist for the Bureau of Fire Prevention and Public Safety, in the Glendale train derailments. In addition to deputy James Tutino, the Sheriff's department also lost Manuel D. Alcala, 51, a senior maintenance worker at County Jail. The death toll has reached 11 with more possibly missing under the debris. With about 120 people taken to hospitals, the Glendale-Crescenta Valley chapter of the American Red Cross has called an emergency blood drive.

In addition to the mainbar, the Times package in Thursday's papers includes sidebars on the victims who died, suspect Juan Manuel Alvarez, the rescuers, the scene inside the trains, how the lineup of train cars may have contributed to the deaths, the effect on commuters, and a piece from Washington on similar suicide attempts. AP has a sidebar on the Costco employees who helped out. The Daily News banner is "HORRIFIC" and the paper has its own package of sidebars from the scene and covering the grief in Ventura County.
