Nice company

GQ's Men of the Year issue includes a piece by former LAT reporter Jeffrey Gettleman—now at the New York Times—on what he saw covering the Iraq war. It's titled "Dispatches From a Disaster." The Men of the Year, by the way, include James Gandolfini, Tom Cruise, Jude Law, Dustin Hoffman, Barak Obama, Russell Simmons, Craig Venter and Sean Thackrey, a one-man winemaker up in Bolinas. The mag's Women of the Year are Kate Winslet, Uma Thurman, Gwen Stefani, Loretta Lynn and Maria Sharapova, whose legs are all over town on billboards for the weekend's tennis tournament at Staples Center.

Speaking of the NYT: Bill Safire's final op-ed column will run Jan. 24. He will continue to write "On Language" in the Sunday magazine.
