The anonymous City Hall blogger has decided the job risk isn't worth it.
After some lengthy discussions, and a few cocktails, it has been decided that the now infamous blog will come to an end.Over the few months, over 4000 people visited this site each day - a number I would have never dreamt of when I started. I have no doubt that many of you out there are relieved that the Fourth Floor blog is disappearing. I am certain that many Councilmembers and the Mayor are happy to know that this site will no longer chronicle their daily activities, indiscretions, and mishaps.
There are many reasons for my sudden departure. Sadly, the overwhelming and surprising success of this blog has become its greatest detriment.
Principally, the blog is closing because interest in my identity. Unfortunately, City Hall interest in who is running the blog has compromised my ability to protect confidential sources who have revealed some very good stories - many of which I am proud to say have been picked up on by the mainstream media. Additionally, the amount of time it takes to run this blow, have grown to unmanageable proportions - since I have always run the blog on my own time.
I'm distressed that he or she feels this way, but not really surprised. The idea of doing an insider blog in a building awash in insecurity and political ambition seemed like a short-term proposition. But the 4th Floor will be missed. Reaction at LAVoice.org.
* Hertzberg weighs in: The mayoral candidate offers to provide free and confidential space on his web host for the 4th Floor to continue. I don't see how that addresses the blogger's fear about keeping his or her job safe, but OK. (And as a City Hall player just asked in private email, what would happen if the 4th Floor blogged about something sensitive to Hertzberg, such as last spring's family feud that prompted a flurry of fake comments here at L.A. Observed?)
