Even bloggers do those annual lists now. Blogging.la's favorites for 2004, posted today, tend to the Silver Lake-Los Feliz-Melrose side of things, but not rigorously. One contributor even endorses the Third Street Promenade-adjacent Hennessey & Ingalls in Santa Monica as best bookstore. ("Los Angeles" is defined rather loosely, but the choice is solid.) Also on the site, Will Campbell admirably uses Shocknek as a verb and explains it for newcomers.
