More City Hall subpoenas

Under the headline "City Hall Probe Widens," the Daily News reports that new federal grand jury subpoenas went out Thursday to officials in three departments -- Airports, Harbor and Water and Power. The requests demand records on any contracts of $100,000 or more awarded from Jan. 1, 1998, to Aug. 1, 2000 -- a period the paper says "corresponds closely with the time Ted Stein, a San Fernando Valley developer and longtime city commissioner, served as head of the Harbor Commission."

Stein is currently on the Airports commission. The paper's Rick Orlov and Beth Barrett report:

Stein's role as head of the Airport Commission under Mayor James Hahn was among the questions that recently prompted the District Attorney's Office and a county grand jury to open an investigation of possible "pay-to-play" contracting practices at City Hall under which contractors are pressured to contribute to political campaigns.

Stein has denied wrongdoing.

It's really starting to feel like this story isn't going away.
