I shouldn't have been surprised (end of post) that studio location filming irked parts of L.A. in the 1920s. An e-mailer writes that film crews were bothersome even earlier:
I saw your posting and wanted to let you know that disputes
over filming actually date back to the late teens. As a volunteer with
the Echo Park Historical Society, I've seen correspondence between the city of
L.A. and Mack Sennett/Keystone studios about the impact of filming around
Echo Park Lake and the damage done by film crews at that park. Film crews
were actually banned from the park around 1917 and it took years for
Sennett to get the ban repealed.
Soon after, Sennett moved to Valleywood where his operation put the "studio" in Studio City. Later Republic Pictures, the old Sennett studio grounds are now the CBS lot on Radford Avenue.
