The Deal does Freedom

The Deal takes a hard look at the pending sale of Freedom Communications, owner of the Register in Orange County and 64 other newspapers, and likes the prospects of the Hoiles family members who are in the bidding. They have an edge by tapping into the firm's libertarian roots, writes Richard Morgan.

Those values, which cherish self-responsibility and individual freedom, serve to this day as the bedrock of every Freedom newspaper's editorial page. More relevant to the auction, however, is that they've been cleverly incorporated into a bid designed to save the country's 12th-largest media company from new ownership.
