David Laventhol most recently had been the chairman and editorial director of Columbia Journalism Review. He came up in journalism as an editor and created the Washington Post Style section. He was publisher of the L.A. Times from 1989-94 during the Shelby Coffey era. Laventhol remains chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists. (NY Daily News)
