Don Frederick, currently an editor in the L.A. Times Washington bureau, will run the paper's national political desk for the 2004 election cycle. He has worked on the desk in past elections. On the local side, the editor of the Metro politics operation, Jim Newton, is taking a two-year leave to write a book about Earl Warren, the former California governor and Supreme Court chief justice.
